Two Steps Higher!

About Us

We are Tom and Denise Sutphen, a versatile duo just right for many events... private parties like birthdays, picnics, anniversaries, etc.  We also do well at listening bars where you get a wide age range and folks who want to hear all different kinds of music (pop, country, rock, motown, oldies, folk, etc.)  We even do well at wedding ceremonies (receptions only where you don't want the traditional "schtick" like the Chicken Song, Hokey Pokey, Celebration, etc.)  We do take advantage of a music sequencer to add drums, bass, and other instruments and are capable of playing many dancable numbers in addition to good listening favorites.  Check out our song list, we cover such diverse artists as Bonnie Raitt, Green Day, the Who, Yes, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, ..., even Frank Zappa!  We have been playing together for close to 20 years (married for over 15!) and consequently, have a tight sound from our long performance history.  Click here to go to our song sample page to hear some of our selections.  Give us a call or send us an email!

Denise Sutphen (guitar, lead vocals)

Denise has a rich artistic history in the S.E. Michigan Area.  Not only a great singer and guitarist, she also is an accomplished painter.  You can check out some of her work at her web site, eyeofthebeholder.net.  Denise met Tom in 1985 when she replaced her friend Cass in a trio with Tom and Dennis Green.

Tom Sutphen (keyboards, vocals)

Tom also has been playing in the area for many years.  His "day job" is in IT Systems at Ford Motor Company.  The duo "borrowed" their name from a jazz/funk band Tom performed with in the 70's, also known as Two Steps Higher.  After that, he played with Rockestra out of Toledo, OH and eventually moved to Florida to perform.  After 6 years or so as a full time musician, Tom moved into computer systems work, where he's been for roughly 22 yrs (17 yrs at Ford Motor Company).
